What's Going on
Here?
In case you just notice, you aren't at our
Whittier College URL right now. Why? Whittier College does not
currently support the FrontPage Server Extensions that we need to use to collect
information, among other things. This prevents us from some of the dynamic
features available to us on FrontPage to make your browsing experience more
enjoyable. For example—
- We can collect your member information from a
form directly into the correct format for transfer to our secured database.
- We can set up forms so you can e-mail us
directly even if the browser you work with is not set up for e-mail, a big
problem for those of you surfing at work or at a school computer lab.
Right now, the service we are using is free and
therefore limited on space. Unfortunately, we will also have to tolerate some
advertising but this is a small price to pay for control over how we present and
collect information on our web site.
Why don't we pay for a site elsewhere?
While we could go to a fee-for-service based
site, the Web Page Committee (comprised of Palmer Alumnae, although all are
welcome), felt that any monies available should be devoted to Actives. This is
also why we haven't registered an easier URL at this time.
Why stay with the College URL Site?
Whittier College has been generous to the Palmer
Society with both space and technical support for our web publishing needs.
Not only that, we don't want to lose you and other newbie Palmer surfers by
moving the Palmer Society Web Page all over the Web. Furthermore, the
internet market is incredibly volatile. We want to make sure we always
have a reliable presence on the web that we can count on.
All this aside, we hope that you will not notice
any differences when you visit The Palmer Society Web Page. In the meantime,
your surfing experience should be seamless as long as both servers are working
and the links are intact. By expanding in this way, we hope to improve our
Palmer Communications even better!
